<image:title>Pet First Aid 4U Blog - Protecting Your Pets from Wildfire Dangers - When the air quality takes a nosedive, heed these safety tips to protect your pets: Keep your pets inside as much as possible. Close all windows and doors to minimize the smoke's infiltration and use air purifiers if available. Let your dog out for a brief period for bathroom breaks. Use a damp cloth to remove any smoke debris on your pet’s paws and body after outdoor potty breaks. Pay attention to evacuation orders and be prepared to act quickly if the situation escalates. Remain calm around your pets, as they can sense anxiety and stress.</image:title>

<image:title>Pet First Aid 4U Blog - Use the Muttgyver Way to Quickly Restrain an Injured Dog</image:title>
<image:caption>1. Approach the dog from the back for your safety. Never do a face off with an injured dog. 2. Hold the two ends of the leash in the air in what looks like a happy smile. 3. Make a loop with the two ends of the leash. Make it a little bigger than the dog’s muzzle. 4. Grab this loop with your two hands and quickly place it over the dog’s muzzle. Pull for a snug fit to prevent the lower jaw from opening. 5. Make a second loop and tie it under the chin. 6. Pull the ends of the leash toward you and make a third and final tie at the back of the neck. 7. Secure it by tying it like you do for your shoelaces. If the dog starts choking, this method will enable you to quickly release the leash and provide aid to your dog.</image:caption>

<image:title>Pet First Aid 4U Blog - Welcome to the “New” Normal of Caring for Your Pets - Raise your hand if you miss talking face-to-face with your veterinarian about your pet in the exam room? I know I do. Our Furry Brady Bunch includes three dogs and four cats. Like many of you, I spend more time in the veterinary clinic than I do at the offices of my doctor, dentist and eye doctor combined. Before COVID-19 arrived this year in full force in March, I made four veterinary visits in 2020. They included: Treating stomach issues in Casey, my confident, certified therapy cat. Performing a dental cleaning under anesthesia for Kona, our friendly, smart terrier-mix. Giving head-to-tail wellness exams for Bujeau, our shy Bernese Mountain Dog-mix and Rusty, our just-adopted orange tabby kitten. In each case, I was able to speak in person with my veterinarian, Dr. Debora Charles at length at the Casa Linda Animal Clinic in Dallas about each pet’s medical and at-home care needs.</image:title>

<image:title>Pet First Aid 4U Blog - Tips to Help Your Pet Cope with This Pandemic in a Healthy Way - Signs of Behavioral Changes</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve seen behavioral changes in my pets. Before COVID-19, Kona, my friendly terrier mix, and Casey, my outgoing orange tabby, traveled with me a lot to conduct in-person, veterinarian-approved pet first aid classes, give pet behavior talks, attend pet conferences and make visits to schools, animal shelters and memory care centers as certified therapy pets. Both love interacting with people in new places. Both love road trips – yes, even my cat. Kona usually sits happily on cue to be greeted by visitors. But it had been four months since we had anyone in our home. When my sister, Deb came for a brief visit, Kona acted like she had won the doggy lottery. As soon as she spotted her favorite “aunt” walk up our front porch steps with a mask on, Kona did rapid circles and squealed loudly with delight. She nearly tackled Deb when she walked in the door. On our neighborhood walks, Kona used to wag and politely smile as other leashed dogs passed by. Now, she barks in a high-pitch and pulls on her leash to desperately reach the other dog to sniff and say hi. I feel bad when I wave and smile to the dog’s person as we both keep apart and moving. Cats tend to be more subtle in conveying emotional changes. But now Casey, my usually calm and confident cat, has become super affectionate and catnaps on my lap or near me. He follows me like a furry shadow day and night. He talks to me a lot more, too.</image:caption>

<image:title>Pet First Aid 4U Blog - Make Bath Time a Splashing Successfully – and Healthy -- Event for Your Pet - B-a-t-h Time.</image:title>
<image:caption>Some dogs are major tail-wagging water fans. They love being in water – be it a lake, a backyard pool and yes, even a bathtub or walk-in shower. Others, like my terrier mix, Kona, see the tub of water or a spraying garden hose and quickly shift into reverse gear. And, then there are dogs like Bujeau, my Bernese Mountain Dog mix, who now tolerates regular baths because high-grade treats are being doled out and we make bath time pleasant and calm. Bottom line: our dogs – and on rare occasion, our cats – benefit in many ways when we treat them to a proper bath – especially when they roll in mud or worse, duck poo. Their skin, just like ours, represents the largest organ in the body. Regular bathing and grooming sessions help keep our pets’ coats shiny and healthy as well as allow us to catch early signs of skin issues that can be treated before they get out of hand and expensive. And who doesn’t want to cuddle a clean-smelling four-legged pal?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Pet First Aid 4U Blog - Coping with COVID-19 by Fostering or Adopting Pets – A Win-Win for All</image:title>
<image:caption>We were not expecting to add a third dog into our home. But there she was wandering the streets in our Dallas neighborhood about 10 days into the “shelter in place” orders were issued. She appeared dehydrated and lacked a collar. We quickly took her to our nearby veterinary clinic where the staff confirmed no presence of a microchip identification. Our veterinarian, Dr. Debora Charles at the Casa Linda Animal Clinic, estimated that this black-and-white dog was about one year old and weighed a tad under eight pounds. She also seemed too quiet for this young age. Most pups are full of energy, mischief and curiosity. She also lacked an appetite, declining treats we offered. A thorough medical exam a few days later explained her lethargy. Emma tested dangerously high for heartworms. Treating heartworm disease is expensive and requires a lengthy protocol of treatments taking weeks. It is also critical that any dog infected with heartworms not run or do anything that can accelerate their heartbeats while the menacing worms inside their bodies are being slowly eradicated. We contacted Next Door, local shelters and animal rescue groups to see if anyone was missing her. I suspect that no one claimed her because of the cost associated with treating this serious disease. Or worse. That her owner faced serious health issues and could no longer care for this young dog. We adopted her and selected the name, Emma -- a play of words for, “Who Am I?” She was warmly welcomed by Bujeau, our 85-pound mellow Bernese Mountain Dog mix; Kona, our play-minded terrier mix; and our three indoor cats, Casey, Rusty and Mikey. Today, Emma’s personality has emerged. She smiles, cuddles in our arms and loves to take ‘cat naps’ with our other pets. She has a good appetite, is gaining muscle strength and readily takes her heartworm medicine.</image:caption>

Arden regularly provides such classes with her feline and canine sidekicks, and does so in her signature “edu-taining” style. Class length and topics can be customized for your group.
